Summer vacation is a time high school students immensely look forward to every year, as a time to hang out with friends, go on vacations, and take a break from the stress and schedule of school. Some students, though, take time out of their long awaited vacation to help others. Joey Landis, a junior at ELCO High School, spent part of his summer last year serving others in Ashland, Kentucky.

“Last summer, I had a great opportunity to be apart of the mission trip through the Church of the Good Shepherd. The trip was helping the community with certain projects. For example, my project was to help construct a roof for an addition to a house. During the labor work, we were able to talk to the families about the word of God. During this experience, I really believe we helped shape their lives with the love of God.”
“I learned so much from this experience and formed so many lasting relationships. During our projects, we were able to see how God was working in all of our lives to help us work together to better the community. This trip really opened my eyes to God’s never ending love.”

Through serving, Joey was able to not only build a roof, but also relationships and his own faith. He was also able to build and uplift those he was serving, and this is applicable to every service situation—with a growth and positive mindset, building others builds us as well.
Thank you Joey, for serving others, and for your positive contributions to ELCO High School! Happy Easter everyone!
